What New York asks for — and how this meets it
50 hours, before you file
Every applicant admitted to the New York Bar on or after 1 January 2015 must complete 50 hours of qualifying pro bono service before filing an application for admission. This placement is built to deliver the full 50.
Completed anywhere in the world
Rule 520.16 allows the hours to be completed in any state or territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or any foreign country. Ours are completed remotely, from wherever you are.
Supervised by a qualified lawyer
The work must be supervised by an attorney admitted to practise and in good standing in the jurisdiction where the work is performed. Your supervisor is a solicitor of England and Wales, on the roll and in good standing with the SRA.
Law-related, and genuinely pro bono
Qualifying service includes assisting in the provision of legal services without charge to persons of limited means and to not-for-profit organisations. Sequentus is a not-for-profit. Our clients are nurses and midwives who cannot afford to defend the proceedings against them.
The 50-hour requirement is set by Rule 520.16 of the Rules of the Court of Appeals and administered by the New York State Board of Law Examiners and the Appellate Division. We provide the supervision, the evidenced hours and the certified affidavit; we are not able to advise you on your own application for admission, so please check your position with the Board before relying on any placement.
A training day, ten weeks, fifty hours
One day of live online training
Before your placement starts you spend a full day in live online training with the lawyers who will supervise you — how professional discipline cases work, how to read a regulator's bundle, and how to do the casework to a standard a client can rely on.
Your intake and your case
You join a dated intake alongside other New York Bar candidates — everybody starts the same Monday. In week one you are allocated a live professional discipline case that one of our solicitors is leading — an unrepresented nurse or midwife facing a fitness to practise hearing. You work on the real file alongside them, not a simulation.
Casework and supervision
Around five hours a week: chronologies, evidence review, legal research, drafting written submissions and instructions to counsel. Your intake gets a dedicated Teams channel where the solicitor leading the case answers questions and reviews work as you go, so supervision fits round your week rather than a fixed meeting slot.
Weekly supervision
A weekly supervision session for the whole intake, alongside the day-to-day supervision in your Teams channel. Your hours are logged against date and duration as you go, so the count is evidenced from contemporaneous records rather than reconstructed at the end.
Affidavit, wet-signed
We complete your Affidavit of Compliance, your supervising solicitor certifies and signs it in ink, and the original goes to you by tracked courier — included in the fee.

Building the next generation of legal professionals
Sequentus is a not-for-profit established in 2022. Our goal is simple — to provide flexible legal work experience to people from non-traditional backgrounds so that they can fulfil their potential.
Over the past eight years, across different organisations, our team have trained thousands of aspiring lawyers in casework methodology, giving them the knowledge and skills to complete meaningful work on client cases. We're proud that our model ensures that clients who would otherwise be denied access to justice can rely on a highly-focused team of qualified and trainee lawyers, while students get access to dynamic, real-life legal experience.
Where your fees go
There are no shareholders and no profit distributions — all of our profit is reinvested in the work: legal representation for clients who could not otherwise afford it, the training programmes, and the secure platforms the casework runs on.
Three intakes a year, one fee
Places are bought against a dated intake in a specific month. Fees are payable in advance, and refundable within 14 days of booking if you have not accessed the course materials.
